Code Blue is a site-specific work responding to the ecosystems of Altona Coastal Park,  framing the site as a vibrant ecosystem containing a web of interconnected living and non-living beings. The work aims to position marine ecologies as sites with agency, that shape and are shaped by more-than-human forces and bodies. It seeks to interrogate the capitalist perspective of water-as-resource, alluding to speculative futures of multispecies kinship and ecological recuperation through creative methods. The unpredictable nature of the cyanotype process allows me to relinquish control over the creative process, highlighting the agency of the materials. Through this method, I aim to de-centre myself as the artist and enter a collaborative relationship with the site, materials and the more-than-human forces that shape the work.

The title Code Blue was derived from curator and academic Bronwyn Bailey-Chateris, who reminds us that water continues to be understood as a political and economic resource. The hydrological cycle is further disrupted by practices such as burning fossil fuels in oil refineries, including the Altona Refinery which ceased production in 2021. As Bailey-Chateris states, ‘This is Code Red, or, given the centrality of water, Code Blue.’
